Kidney - renal medulla (40x objective lens)

This image shows a collecting duct in the renal medulla. This duct serves as a passageway for urine collected from several collecting tubules in the renal cortex. The wall is composed of a simple cuboidal epithelium. On either side of the duct are numerous thin segments of Henle's loops, lined by simple squamous epithelium with oval nuclei, and their associated blood vessels, the vasa recta, lined by endothelial cells with flattened nuclei and containing eosinophilic erythrocytes.
