This low magnification view of the trachea shows three layers: (1) the mucosa consisting of a pseudostratified columnar epithelium an its underlying lamina propria of loose connective tissue; (2) the submucosa, separated from the mucosa by an indistinct boundary and containing seromucous glands; and (3) a cartilaginous layer, containing rings of hyaline cartilage (lower right corner). Note shown is the adventitia that covers the outside of the trachea.
