Spinal cord - ventral horn (10x objective lens)


This image shows a portion of the ventral or motor horn of the spinal cord (radiating from the lower left corner). Note the fine nerve tracts that traverse the white matter. Some of these penetrate the pia mater (the thin inner connective tissue covering of the spinal cord and brain) and enter the ventral root nerve, seen here in cross section, composed of several bundles of nerve fibers. The thick layer of gold-stained tissue at the right edge of the image is the dura mater, the outer connective tissue covering of the cord and brain.
