Spinal cord - dorsal root ganglion (plastic section) (40x objective lens)

This view of a plastic section from the dorsal root ganglion shows cross sections of numerous nerve fibers. The actual nerve fibers are stained pink and appear to be surrounded by a circular clear space, corresponding to the myelin sheath. Note that the nerve fibers are grouped into bundles, called fascicles, separated from one another by a layer of connective tissue, called the perineurium. The thicker connective tissue covering at the left and bottom edges of the image is the epineurium.
