Terminal ganglion - Meissner's plexus - plastic section (100x objective lens)

This image from the ileum shows Meissner's plexus (submucosal plexus) of neurons and nerves, located in the submucosa of the digestive tract. The ganglion cells are terminal ganglia of the enteric division of the autonomic nervous system. The nuclei of 4-5 neurons can be seen in whole or in part, and others are out of the plane of section. The small nuclei adjacent to the neurons belong to satellite cells. Note that in very thin plastic sections, the nucleoli typically seen in neurons may not be seen because they lie outside of the plane of section.
