Terminal ganglion - Auerbach's plexus - plastic section (20x objective lens)

This image from the colon shows Auerbach's plexus (myenteric plexus) of neurons and nerves, located between the inner and outer layers of the muscularis externa of the digestive tract. The ganglion cells are terminal ganglia, part of the enteric division of the autonomic nervous system. The nuclei of several neurons can be seen in whole or in part, and others are out of the plane of section. Such neurons can be identified by their large size and their large nucleus with a single large and prominent nucleolus.
