Cerebrum (10x objective lens)

This low magnification view of a section from the mouse brain shows the outer portion of the cerebral cortex, the gray matter of the cerebrum. Outermost is the molecular layer, which contains numerous fibers and only a few neuronal cell bodies. Beneath the molecular layer is the external granular layer, containing interneurons called granule cells, and glia cells. The next layer, which is the thickest layer, is the external pyramidal cell layer, composed of pyramidal cells, granule cells and neuroglia. Beneath this (not shown) are three more layers of gray matter (internal granular layer, internal pyramidal layer, and multiform layer) and white matter.
