Spinal cord - dorsal root nerve (40x objective lens)

This section of the dorsal root nerve shows numerous myelinated nerve fibers. The nerve fibers appear as blue lines bounded by a clear space. The space is a fixation artifact caused by shrinkage and the partial extraction of the lipid that makes up myelin. Nodes of Ranvier appear as lines perpendicular to the long axis of the nerve fiber.

Stain = AZAN.
