Peripheral nerve - penis (20x objective lens)

This section from the human penis shows three nerves cut in cross and tangential section. Each nerve consists of a single fascicle, surrounded by a thick perineurium of dense collagenous connective tissue in which the flattened nuclei of fibroblasts can be seen. The nerves are embedded in dense irregular connective tissue along with several blood vessels. The cell nuclei that can be seen within the nerves belong primarily to Schwann cells.
