Peripheral nerve - bronchus (40x objective lens)

This image from the lung shows a longitudinal section through a peripheral nerve in the wall of a segmental bronchus. The nerve consists of a single fascicle, surrounded by a thin perineurium and embedded in loose connective tissue. The cell nuclei that can be seen within the nerves belong primarily to Schwann cells. Note the sinuous appearance of the fibers and Schwann cell nuclei. This is characteristic of nerves in histological sections. Capillaries with flattened endothelial cell nuclei are present within the perineurium.
