This high magnification image of the plastic section shows skeletal muscle cut in cross section (to the right) and longitudinal section (to the left). longitudinal and cross striations. Identify the I-bands and A-bands in the fibers on the left, and the myofibrils in the fibers on the right of the image. Note the relatively large diameter of the muscle fibers, compared with the diameter of the nuclei, which are located just under the plasma membrane, in the corners of these polyhedral cells. The punctate appearance of the cytoplasm is due to the presence of large numbers of myofibrils cut in cross section.
Stain = Iron Hematoxylin.
