This plastic section of skeletal muscle from the upper esophagus cut in cross and oblique section primarily shows an absence of striation. However, the cross sectioned myofibrils give the cytoplasm a punctate appearance. Muscle cell nuclei can be seen at the edges of the cells, just beneath the plasma. Other nuclei, usually flatter and more darkly stained and lying outside of the muscle cells, belong either to fibroblasts or endothelial cells. The unstained extracellular spaces are filled with extracellular matrix.
