This plastic section shows skeletal muscle fibers cut in cross section. Note the "rough" a ppearance of the cut fibers, caused by the presence of cross sectioned myofibrils. Circular profiles of pale staining muscle cell nuclei lie just beneath the plasma membrane. Other nuclei, located between the muscle cells and usually flatter and more darkly stained, belong either to fibroblasts or endothelial cells. The small "holes" seen throughout the section are cross sectioned capillaries. The unstained extracellular spaces are filled with extracellular matrial.
