Cardiac muscle, Purkinje fibers (20x objective lens)

This section of cardiac muscle shows Purkinje fibers (to the right) which are hypertrophied (enlarged) cardiac muscle cells, that have been modified to conduct electrical impulses throughout the heart. The cells have centrally located nuclei and peripherally located myofibrils. The interiors of the cells are devoid of myofibrils and most organelles and stain lightly, if at all. .
