This very high magnification view shows Purkinje fibers in cross section. Purkinje fibers are hypertrophied (enlarged) cardiac muscle cells. The remnants of myofibrils, are located peripherally, whereas the lightly stained cell center is devoid of myofibrils and most other organelles.
