This section of cardiac muscle shows the longitudinal and cross striations that make cardiac muscle a "striated" muscle. The oval-shaped nuclei are centrally located within each mononucleated cell. Note the dark lines, perpendicular to the long axis of some of the fibers, which mark the location of an intercalated discs. The dark-staining, elongated nuclei outside of the muscle fibers belong primarily to endothelial cells.
