Cardiac muscle, teased (40x objective lens)

This preparation of teased cardiac muscle shows the longitudinal and cross striations of the muscle fibers, which are mononucleated cells with centrally located nuclei. Also visible are the intercalated discs, which appear as dark lines, perpendicular to the long axis of the fibers and which mark the location of the junctional complexes that attach two cardiac muscle fibers together.

Stain = Iron Hematoxylin.
