Skeletal muscle, cross section (40x objective lens)

In this cross section of skeletal muscle, note the relatively large diameter of the muscle fibers, compared with the diameter of the nuclei, which are located just under the plasma membrane, in the corners of these polyhedral cells. The punctate appearance of the cytoplasm is due to the presence of large numbers of myofibrils cut in cross section. The band of connective tissue angling through the lower left quadrant of the image is part of the perimysium.

Stain = Iron Hematoxylin.
