This low magnification
image of a section from a human palatine tonsil shows aggregations of lymphatic
cells and several germinal centers. The surface facing the oral cavity (to
the left) is covered by a nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium similar
to that that covers the rest of the oral mucosa. Directly beneath the epithelium
is a lamina propria of loose connective tissue containing numerous blood and
lymphatic vessels.
