Thin skin (40x objective lens)

This high magnification image of a section from thin skin shows the epidermis and the underlying dermis. Starting at the epidermal-dermal boundary several layers of epidermis can be seen: stratum germinativum (1 cell layer thick); stratum spinosum (2-3 cells thick); stratum granulosum (1 cell thick) stratum corneum, composed of a several layers of very flattened, anucleate keratinized cells. The underlying dermis, is composed of dense irregular collagenous connective tissue. In the lower right corner one end of an arrector pili muscle can be seen; the other end is attached to the connective tissue sheath of a hair follicle
