Hair follicle bulb (40x objective lens)

This high magnification image of a section from the dermis of the skin shows the buld of a hair follicle surrounded by dense irregular connective tissue. The terminal end of the hair follicle (hair bulb) consists of a connective tissue papilla enveloped by matrix cells of the hair root. Note that the hair, which is pigmented brown and the internal root sheath both arise from the matrix.
Stain = H&E.
