Ovary - primordial follicles (20x objective lens)

This image of a section from the ovary shows numerous primordial follicles and a unilaminar primary follicle (lower left quadrant) surrounded by connective tissue stroma. The ovary is covered by a modified mesothelium called the germinal epithelium, although it has nothing to do with the actual germ cells. The germinal epithelium rests on the fibrous connective tissue capsule of the ovary, called the tunica albuginea.
