surrounded by a stroma of connective tissue.
In the center of the follicle is a primary oocyte. Note that the cell is so
large that the nucleus is not visible as it is in an adjacent section. The
oocyte is surrounded by a single layer of follicle cells.
In between the oocyte and the follicle cells is a thin, pink-stained layer
of extracellular matrix, called the zona pellucida.
