In the center of this
image of a section from the pancreas is an islet of
Langerhans, composed of hormone-producing cells derived from epitlhelia.
The cells are characterized by circular nuclei and pale-stained cytoplasm.
No organization is apparent in preparations such as this one, although the
cells are arranged in interlacing sheets. The flattened
nuclei seen in around the islet cells belong to capillary endothelial
cells. Surrounding the islet are the serous acini of
pancreatic exocrine cells.
