Nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium (40x objective lens)


This section shows the nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium that lines and protects the lumen of the esophagus. The surface cells are flattened as shown by their flattened nuclei. Note that nuclei are present in cells the at the free surface (right edge), indicating that the cells are alive and not keratinized.
