Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium (20x objective lens)

This medium magnification image of the section from a thick skin shows the epidermis and its underlying dermis. The outer portion of the epidermis is composed of numerous very thin layers of squamous cells, which lack nuclei and are filled with the protein keratin. The inner (lower) portion of the epidermis is composed of more or less cuboidal cells with nuclei and basophilic cytoplasm. The dermis, which sends finger-like extensions into the epidermis is composed of pink-staining collagen fibers and numerous cells with purple-stained nuclei.
