Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium (40x objective lens)

This high magnification image of the section from thin skin shows epidermis made of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and underlaying dermis. The keratinized squamous cell layer is thin, and partialy detached. The cells in the deeper layers are more or less cuboidal and have basophilic cytoplasm. Note the presence of dark brown melanin granules, which are highly concentrated in the deepest layers of the epidermis.
