Nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium (20x objective lens)


This section from the vagina shows the nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium that lines the lumen of the vagina, protecting it from mechanical damage. Note that cell nuclei can be seen even in the cells at the free surface of the epithelium, indicating that the cells are still alive and not filled with keratin.
