Transitional epithelium (40x objective lens)

This section shows the transitional epithelium that lines the renal pelvis, the region of the kidney where urine collects before being transported to the bladder. The giant cells that make up the surface layer exhibit shapes ranging from flattened (on the left) to dome-shaped (on the right). The cells in the underlying layers are more or less cuboidal.
