image of the structure of the parenchyma of the pineal gland. The gland is
composed primarily of secretory cells, called pinealocytes
, organized into clumps or cords separated by connective tissue septa
that derive from the connective tissue capsule (not seen). Also present are
several calcified concretions, called brain sand,
which are strongly basophilic owing to the concentration of cations in the
concretions.
