Submaxillary gland (20x objective lens)

This image shows parts of a lobule and the interlobular connective tissue. Identifiable within the lobule are: (1) serous secretory units (Se), composed of wedge-shaped columnar cells with dark-stained cytoplasm; (2) mucous secretory units (Mu), composed of wedge-shaped columnar cells with relatively unstained cytoplasm; (3) serous demilunes (SDL), composed of semicircular groups of wedge-shaped serous cells attached to the outer surface of a mucous secretory unit; and (4) a striated intralobular duct, composed of columnar cells whose basal striations are not resolved at this magnification. Within the interlobular connective tissue are: (1) connective tissue (CT) containing large numbers of collagen fibers, stained blue with aniline blue; (2) interlobular ducts (ID), composed of columnar cells ; and large vessels (V) of the blood and lymph vascular systems.
