Ileum - Meissner's plexus- plastic section (100x objective lens)

This image shows a ganglion called Meissner's plexus in the submucosa of the ileum. This ganglion contains nerve cells of the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system and the pre- and postganglionic nerve fibers associated with these neurons. The neurons are characterized by their large size and their very large nuclei (Nu), which often have prominent nucleoli. There are also supporting cells, including satellite cells derived from Schwann cells, which form a partial covering of the neuronal perikaryon.
