This image is from
the liver of a rat that has been injected intravenously with colloidal carbon
(India ink). The carbon
particles travel in the blood and, when they reach the liver,
are phagocytosed by Kupffer cells that reside in the endothelial lining of
the hepatic sinusoids. This image shows a central
vein (CV) surrounded by rows (cords) of hepatocytes
(He). The black aggregations of carbon
particles (CP) can be readily seen within
the hepatic
sinusoids (Si) that separate the rows of hepatocytes.
