Anorectal junction - anal canal epidermis (20x objective lens)

This image shows the wall of the anal canal near the anal orifice. This portion of the anal canal is covered by hairless skin, consisting of epidermis (Ep) and its underlying dermis (De). The epidermis is a typical keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium (KSSE) with a prominent stratum corneum (SC). The dermis is loose connective tissue in the papillary layer (PL) closest to the epidermis, from which dermal papillae (DP) arise. The deeper, reticular layer (RL) , is dense irregular connective tissue.
