Jejunum - Villi and Crypts (20x objective lens)

This medium magnification view of the jejunum shows the mucosa cut in tangential section. The villi, which are uppermost in the image, are covered by a simple columnar epithelium composed of goblet cells and absorptive cells, and contain a core of loose connective tissue. At the bases of the villi are the crypts of Lieberkuhn (intestinal glands), which are lined by a simple columnar epithelium also composed of absorptive cells and goblet cells. In the bases of the glands are Paneth cells, containing eosinophilic granules. The glands are also surrounded by the highly cellular loose connective tissue of the lamina propria. In the lower right hand corner is the thin muscularis mucosae, beneath which is the submucosa.
Stain = H&E.
