Esophagus - Middle - Mucosa and submucosa (10x objective lens)


This medium magnification view of the mucosa and submucosa of the middle portion of the esophagus shows: (1) the mucosa, consisting of a nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium, the underlying lamina propria, and the thick muscularis mucosae of smooth muscle; and (2) the submucosa, containing mucus-secreting esophageal glands.
