Esophagus - Upper (10x objective lens)


This view of the upper portion of the esophagus shows, beginning in the lower left-hand corner: 1) the mucosa, consisting of a nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium; the underlying lamina propria of connective tissue; and the muscularis mucosae, composed of smooth muscle; 2) the submucosa, composed of loose connective tissue; 3) the thick, two-layered muscularis externa, composed of skeletal muscle; and 4) the connective tissue adventitia.
Stain = H&E.
