Submaxillary Gland (40x objective lens)

This high magnification view of the submaxillary gland shows the mixture of basophilic serous secretory units and unstained mucous secretory units with basophilic serous demilunes. Note the intercalated duct amidst the secretory units at the bottom edge of the image, near the center. It is lined by a simple cuboidal epithelium. A portion of an interlobular duct can be seen at the upper edge of the image. It is lined by a stratified columnar epithelium. Note the presence of terminal bars at the apical margins of the surface cells. Note also the collagenous connective tissue septum associated with the interlobular duct. Such septa form the boundaries of lobules.
Stain = H&E.
