Tongue - Circumvallate Papillae (10x objective lens)

This medium magnification view of the tongue shows the base of circumvallate papillae and its surrounding groove (fr. Latin, vallum = moat). On the left side of the groove is a duct and numerous secretory units of the serous von Ebner's glands. On the right, arrayed along the side of the papilla facing the groove are taste buds, which stain more lightly that the surrounding stratified squamous epithelium.
Stain = H&E.
