Rabbit Tongue - Foliate papillae (4x objective lens)

This low magnification view of the tongue of the rabbit shows foliate papillae, which consist of a core of connective tissue (papillae of lamina propria) covered by a nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. Note the secondary connective tissue papillae within the foliate papillae. Located deeper in the connective tissue are the secretory units and ducts of lingual glands.
