Human Lip - Transition Zone (10x objective lens)

This medium magnification view of the transition zone of the the lip shows the transition from a keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium to a nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. Note the bundles of skeletal muscle located in the connective tissue of the dermis/lamina propria. Note also the papillae of connective tissue that extend up into the epithelium bringing blood vessels close to the surface, thereby creating the characteristic red color of the lip (red or vermillion zone/border).

Stain = H&E.
