Pancreas (10x objective lens)

This image is a mosaic composed of several micrographs showing part of the pancreas. Included in the image is the excretory duct (duct of Wirsung) (ED) covered by a thick layer of connective tissue. Large interlobular ducts (ID) that drain several lobules and flow into the excretory duct at an acute angle, in a "herring bone" pattern, are seen in both longitudinal and cross sections. The pancreatic tissue is composed mostly of exocrine acini, but there is a single island of endocrine tissue, called an islet of Langerhans (IL), in the upper center of the image. Not resolved at this magnification are the intercalated ducts that drain the exocrine acini.
