islet of Langerhans (40x objective lens)
This image shows an
islet of Langerhans surrounded by exocrine acini. The endocrine islet cells
can be distinguished from the exocrine cells on the basis of their lightly
stained cytoplasm and their lack of acinar structure. In addition, the nuclei
of the endocrine cells are somewhat more variable in size than those of exocrine
cells. The islets also have a higher density of capillaries than
the surrounding exocrine pancreas and numerous capillaries
(Ca) lined by endothelial cells (En) can
be seen associated with islets.
