This image shows an
intercalated duct (ID) surrounded by serous acini
in the exocrine portion of the pancreas. Intercalated
ducts are small intralobular ducts that carry the secretions from one or a
small number of acini into the larger intralobular ducts that drain into the
interlobular excretory ducts. The wall of the intercalated duct is a simple
columnar epithelium of low columnar cells with oval-shaped nuclei
(N) and relatively unstained cytoplasm.
