This high magnification
image shows a plastic section of pituitary gland stained with hematoxylin
and eosin. Hematoxylin stains the cytoplasm of basophils
purple, whereas eosin stains the cytoplasm of acidophils
pink. Erythrocytes, present in the blood vessels
and lacking nuclei, are also stained pink with eosin. The cytoplasm of some
of the cells, called chromophobes (yellow arrow),
remains unstained. Hematoxylin stains the condensed chromatin
in the nuclei and the DNA and RNA in the nucleoli
of all of the cells, except the enucleated erythrocytes.
