Skeletal muscle (100x objective lens )

In this high magnification image of a longitudinal section of skeletal muscle stained with iron hematoxylin, the muscle proteins are stained black, revealing cross striations (arrow), formed by the alignment of the sarcomeres in adjacent myofibrils. The DNA and RNA in the oval-shaped muscle cell nuclei, located at the outer edge of the cell under the plasma membrane, are also stained black by iron hematoxylin.
