Hyaline Cartilage (10x objective lens)


This image of hyaline cartilage shows large numbers of lacunae, occupied by chondrocytes, and surrounded by an extracellular matrix that stains more or less uniformly. Note that the chondrocytes are smaller that the lacunae, an artifact caused by dehydration, which causes the cells to shrink more than the more rigid matrix.
