Capillary and lymphatic vessel (100x objective lens)

This section from the esophagus shows capillaries (Ca) cut in cross and longitudinal section near the bottom edge of the image and to the right of center. One or more pink-stained erythrocytes can be seen in the lumen of some of the capillaries. The elongated endothelial cell nucleus (En) bulges into the lumen of the capilary. Another capillary, cut in cross section, can be seen just beneath the basal layer of the epithelium, with a endothelial cell nucleus that bulges into the lumen. In the right center of the image is an irregular space, lined by endothelial cells (En) with flattened nuclei and containing no blood cells. This is a lymphatic vessel (LV).
