Compact lamellar bone - fully open condenser diaphragm (20x objective lens)

This is an image shows a preparation of ground bone, viewed with the condenser diaphragm fully open. This produces an image with contrast that is too low to visualize the structure of the tissue. It has been stained with India ink, which fills the spaces in the mineralized bone matrix, but these are not visible in this low contrast image. What is visible are: (1) numerous lanceolate lacunae, which are holes in the bone matrix that are occupied by osteocytes; and (2) an Haversian canal (the circular structure in the center of the image).
