Intramembranous bone formation - fetal skull (rodent) (4x objective lens)

This image of the developing skull of a rodent shows numerous eosinophilic spicules (trabeculae) of new, woven bone (primary spongiosa). Note that the trabeculae, which form directly in the embryonic connective tissue (mesenchyme), outline the location of the future complete upper mandible. (Note part of a developing tooth at the right edge of the image.)
